Experience Batwa Community

Who We Are
Our Roots
The Batwa community were evicted from Bwindi Impenetrable Forest three decades ago in a step to conserve wildlife.
They now live on the edges of the National Park. They have been given a small piece of land in the forest to demonstrate their cultural practices to paying tourists.
The older generation miss their traditional way of life. However, the younger generation recognise some of the benefits from their new way of living. The education they now receive and learning English gives them an opportunity to live and work outside of Bwindi.
But they need money to send their kids to school and capital to improve healthcare. This is still brought in by tourists who come to Bwindi, mainly to see the mountain gorillas, but who also want to learn about the community.

Local Crafts
"Perhaps travel cannot prevent bigotry, but by demonstrating that all peoples cry, laugh, eat, worry, and die, it can introduce the idea that if we try and understand each other, we may even become friends.”
